The Dangers of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Take a look at the ingredient list on many of the products around your home and you’ll probably see sodium lauryl sulfate listed. It’s the additive put into products to make them foam. This extra foam has been linked to cancer, skin irritants, endocrine problems, and toxicity in the body. We’re not sure about you, but none of that sounds like any fun to us!

Where to Find ItThe Dangers of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and What You Can Do

Take a quick stroll into your bathroom. Start looking at the ingredients of your favorite shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, or soap. Chances are you’re going to see sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, listed on many of the labels. You might also see it in your laundry detergent. Even some of your household cleaners might have it!

What Else It Might Be Called

We are getting smarter! Thanks to technology being at our fingertips any time we want, many people have come to realize that sodium lauryl sulfate is bad for their health. So the manufacturing and packaging companies have gotten tricky! Be on the lookout for any of these, as they are essentially the same type of product: sulfuric acid, sodium salt, sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS), dodecyl sulfate, monododecyl ester, sodium salt sulfuric acid, aquarex me, or even aquarex methyl. All of these are variations of sodium lauryl sulfate or so closely related that the negative health impacts are much the same. Don’t let sneaky packaging fool you!

Why Is It So Bad

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health states that sodium lauryl sulfate can cause nausea, vomiting, skin or eye irritation, and even diarrhea. Eww! Plus it has been listed as a possible carcinogen and can also have negative effects on our central nervous system, kidneys, or even our liver.
