Having Trouble Sleeping? Try These Tips!

Various studies have shown that as many as one third of Americans have trouble sleeping each night, while at least half report having trouble sleeping a couple times a week. This is a huge problem! While a doctor is probably your best option for determining why you are having trouble sleeping, we are going to give you seven tips to help you fall asleep faster and sleep longer!

1. Avoid CaffeineHaving Trouble Sleeping? Try These Tips!

This one should go without saying, but avoid drinking coffee, soda pop, and energy drinks – particularly within the hours leading up to bedtime. If you have to have a drink or two each day, we understand. But try to have them earlier in the day.

2. Keep a Consistent Bedtime

It’s helpful to go to sleep at the same time each night. Getting up at the same time each morning will also help keep your body in a routine. Once this becomes habit, you’ll find it easier to sleep because your body will be expecting it.

3. Exercise

Regular exercise will help you feel better. We all know that workouts can cause an energy boost, so make sure you get your workout in at least a few hours before calling it a night. You’ll have burned off some of that extra energy, and you’ll find that sleep troubles you were having are a thing of the past!

4. Avoid Technology

Many of us are guilty of having technology or some type of media going all day long. Checking e-mails, watching TV, listening to the radio, and picking up our cell phones regularly are something we do throughout the day without even realizing it. However, we really need to stop these habits at least an hour or two before bed. This will signal to our bodies that it is time to start to unwind, and our brains will be able to focus on sleeping.

5. Use Essential Oils

Once you’re starting to unwind for the day, it can be helpful to diffuse or apply an essential oil like lavender. Many people who have trouble sleeping believe this to help them fall asleep more quickly and sleep better as a whole. If lavender doesn’t work for you, try another essential oil.

6. Relax

Find a way to relax to reduce your stress. Maybe you can meditate or pray each day. Perhaps deep breathing is your thing. Some love the new adult coloring books that have come out, while others prefer to read. Find what works for you and your body, then try to do this activity at least once per day. When you are able to relax at some point during the day – whether or not it’s right before bed – you’ll find it easier to relax when it’s time to go to sleep each night, eliminating your trouble sleeping!

7. Maintain Blood Sugar Levels

Try to limit – or possibly even eliminate sugars and simple carbohydrates from your diet. Make sure you are eating a healthy diet of protein, complex carbs, fruits and vegetables.
